Hertz Costa Rica: Reservations Terms and Conditions
- Third Party Liability (TPL)
- TPL is mandatory, In case of accident or damages to Third parties or property, customer is responsible for a fix deductible up to 20% of damages. By accepting TPL coverage, customer waive the 20% deductible.
- Cost per day for car class B-C-E-G USD $10.99
- Cost per day for car class A-L USD $12.99
- Cost per day for car class D-F-H-I-J-K-M-N-O-P-R-T USD $15.99
We do not accept any coverage or insurance from foreign companies or bought thru a third party website or company such as Priceline.
- Authorized and Additional Authorized Operators

Authorized Operators
Acceptable Authorized Operators age 25 and older are automatically covered on the Rental Agreement.
Authorized Operators are:
- The employer, employee or fellow employee of renter on company business, (when booking includes company Corporate Discount Number).
- The renter's spouse.
- There is no fees for Authorized Operators.
Additional Authorized Operators
- Individuals not automatically covered on the Rental Agreement as Authorized Operators noted above may be signed on as an "Additional Authorized Operator" (AAO). AAO's must be present and may be signed on to the rental agreement at the time of rental or during the rental.
- Renter and each AAO must be present to sign Rental Agreement, present an acceptable credit card or debit card (if renting city accepts debit cards) in their own name, show valid driver's license, and must be a minimum of 25 years of age. For those 21 through 24 the location's age differential may apply.
Additional Authorized Operators Fees
USD $13.00 per day.
On most rentals the minimum age is 25 without an additional Age Differential Charge, and 21 with an additional Age Differential Charge.
Age Differential Charge Policy
Hertz Costa Rica will rent selected car class vehicles to customers who are age 21-24 with an Age Differential Charge, in addition to the normal rental rate.
Most car classes will require a USD $15.00 per day surcharge, while higher end cars may require a USD $25.00 per day surcharge. See the counter representative for details.
Drivers between the ages 21-24 are allowed to rent up to a mid-size vehicle and will be subject to a USD $15.00 per day on car class A-B-C-D-E-F-G-H-I-L-N-O. All other vehicles J-M-K-P-R-T-U USD $25 per day
All underage renters must be cardholder's of any major credit card.
- Grace Period
- Rentals have a grace period of 59 minutes.
Optional coverage do not have hourly charges/grace period, but are charged as a full day.
Extra hour charges will be incurred at the 59 minute mark if the vehicle is returned more than 59 minutes past the original rental time.
- Collision Damage Waiver ( CDW )
- In the event of any loss or damage to the car, regardless of fault, your financial responsibility extends to the full value of the car at the time of rental, plus expenses for towing, storage impound fees, an administrative fee, legal fees and a reasonable charge for loss of use.
We offer the option that reduces the customer's responsibility, Collision Damage Waiver –CDW, up to the deductible of the vehicle (non waive able (USD $1200 - USD $1800) for damages and USD $4,000.00 in case of theft of vehicle.
If CDW is accepted, we will ask for a deposit on credit card for the amount of USD $1,500.00 - USD $2,500.00 USD for any damage on rented vehicle in addition to the estimated rental charges.
If CDW is declined, the customer will be responsible for the full value of the Hertz Costa Rica vehicle.
If CDW is declined, we will ask for a deposit on credit card for the amount of USD $5,000.00 - USD $10,000.00 USD for any damage on rented vehicle.
CDW does not include damages to the interior, antenna, sound equipment, tires, rims. or windshields, nor any charges for tow, gas, storage, legal fees, loss of use, personal items or any other damage not included.
The cost of CDW may vary depending on location or car type and is charged per each full or partial day of rental. The CDW cost and non-waive able excess (deductibles) varies by vehicle type:
Economy and Compact cars USD $10.00 – $13.00 per day with a non-waive able excess of USD 1,200.00
Standard Car , Full-size Car, Intermediate Car , Luxury Car USD $15.00 - USD $20.00 per day, with a non-waive able excess of USD 1,800.00

Police report declaration at local Judicial Office is required for all collisions and immediate notification must be made to the Rental Company.
- Driver's license
- A valid driver's license from your country of residence must be presented at the time of rental. A valid passport is required to be presented at time of rental.
- Fees and Surcharges
- 1. Airport concession Fee 14% Airport Concession Fee Recovery (ACFR) - This fee is to reimburse Hertz Costa Rica for concession fees paid to the airport for each rental.
2. License Plate Fee Vehicle Licensing Cost Recovery - This fee is for Hertz Costa Rica' recovery of the proportionate amount of vehicle registration, licensing and related fees applicable to a rental. USD $2.49 per day.
3. Energy Surcharge Energy Surcharge - The costs of energy needed to support our business operations have escalated considerably. To offset the increasing costs of utilities, bus fuel, oil and grease, etc., Hertz Costa Rica is separately imposing an Energy Surcharge. USD $0.49 per day.
- Forms of Payment
- Cash - NOT accepted as a deposit.
Credit cards - American Express, Diner's Club, MasterCard and Visa are accepted for payment, or as the guaranteed card for the deductible.
One Trip Travel Order/Voucher - Accepted
Miscellaneous Charge Order - MCO - not accepted
A deductible of USD $1,500.00 - $2,500.00 must be held to your credit card. If there are no accidents/damages during the rental, the credit card amount will be released.
- Insurance and Other Coverage's
- Basic insurance includes limited coverage to persons other than the driver and on property damage to anything other than the Hertz Costa Rica vehicle.
Maximum coverage on Public Liability:
- USD $76,000.00 Medical per person
- USD $153,000.00 Medical per accident
- USD $23,000.00 Property damage per accident.
- Rental Restrictions
- Vehicles may not be driven out of Costa Rica.
All vehicles must be returned to an authorized Hertz Costa Rica location in Costa Rica. Dropping off the vehicle at any location other than the one listed on the reservation will result in additional penalty and recovery charges.
Hertz Costa Rica vehicles, including 4WD are to be operated only on regularly maintained roads. Off-road use is a violation of the rental agreement.
Vehicles and SUV 4WD are not to be driven thru rivers, creeks, beach, ponds, by doing so, all coverage will be voided and customer becomes fully responsible for all damages incur to vehicle.
- Personal Accident Insurance ( PAI )
- Personal Accident Insurance - PAI - is available for USD $2.50 per day for all vehicle types
- Refueling Options
- Hertz Costa Rica has three refueling options available to meet your needs:
- You may purchase a tank of gas from Hertz Costa Rica at time of rental and return the vehicle with as little gas as you prefer. Please be aware that we are unable to issue a refund for unused fuel. However, this method eliminates the need for you to refuel the tank prior to returning.
- You can let us refuel for you and only pay for the fuel required to replace the fuel you used, and for the service and convenience of refueling the tank.
- You can stop and refuel the tank yourself, immediately prior to returning the vehicle.
- Cellular Phones
- Cellular phones are available at a cost of USD 4.99 per day plus airtime.
- Transit Police Ticket
- There is a very strict TRANSIT POLICE LAW effective March 2010.
You must know that when you receive a traffic ticket:
- All infractions are subject to a 30% tax for the PANI (Patronato Nacional de la Infancia) by LAW.
- All infractions are subject to a USD $100 for administration Fee.
- All infractions are subject to a 3% monthly extra charge after ninth day.
If you received a traffic ticket and you do not tell us at returning time, we will process the charges to your credit card under SIGNATURE ON FILE and will apply the administrative fee.
We strongly recommend respecting the laws, driving safety and call immediately so we can assist you to minimize the ticket cost.
- Late Arrival Policy
- It is our policy to hold reservations for up to two hours beyond the schedule arrival time, within the operating hours for the rental location.
If arrival is delayed that time or after hours, we will make our best efforts to honor the reservation.
If you experience delays, please contact the rental location so that they can make their best effort to extend your reservation.
- Reservation Quotes
- Estimated total rental includes rental (time and kilometers), third party coverage, applicable taxes and fees.
The estimated total rental does not include additional kilometers charges, damage waivers, insurance products, special equipment, additional drivers' fees, or other optional items.
For these items, please see the local policy details. The quote rate is valid only for the requested vehicle class for the requested dates and times. If your itinerary changes, please cancel this reservation and obtain a new quote.
